NH Baler Knives

Model 315.
If you have the bale knives set parallel and need to adjust the gap between the knives how can you tell which way you should turn the cam or if it has taken all the slack up?
If you have moved the knives a close together as possible and the gap appears to be right can you turn the cam either way before tightening the locking nut and achieve the same result?
The manual really doesn't say.

What model New Holland have you got? On my 65 you set knife clearance by placing shims on mount bolts. I like to set mine so close that they click when they go by.

You will get the same movement from the cam regardless of which way you turn it. Turning the cam CCW as viewed from the end opposite the nut will ensure that forces exerted on the cam by the plunger will act to tighten, not loosen the nut.
As stated, use shims to set knife clearance. Bearing adjustments are made to tighten the plunger in the chamber. Tighten the plunger, then add shims as required to set knife clearance.

Thanks, you've answered my question. I completely understand how to shim it. The action of the cam was what I didn't understand. I think if I use a small mirror I will be able to see it work. Thanks again.
