Would a New Holland TN 55 be a good all around tractor in the 50 HP range for a small single tractor farm? Have there been any problems with the TN55 that I should should look for? Would $10,000.00 be a good price for a 2003 model with less than 600 hours? Or would I be better off buying a good Ford 4000, 4600, 4610 diesel in the $5,000 to $8,000 range? That seems to be about what they are going for her in NC. We would probably use it less than 100 hours. What would be the maximum number of hours on an original tractor that should give us 5 to 10 years additional use without any major repairs to engine, transmission, etc.?

Thanks in advance for any advise you can share with me.

RickB, Bern, and RodinNS are pretty knowledgeable on these blue machines and they can give you a good answer to your question. I have a 4610 as the prime machine on our ranch and it"s a pretty bulletproof machine. Wish it had better hydraulics, more range in the tranny, and hydrostatic steering but it"s done well for us so far.

the tn55 is a real comfy machine. if it has a loader its well worth 15000. no loader then 10000 sounds fair. the others you mentioned are good machines, but the tn55 has more bells and whistles

You would be better off with the Ford 4000-4630 in my opinion... later the better. Still basic simple tractors; good for 10K hours if maintained properly and not abused too bad.
The TN will give you more electric doo-dads and not much else. The Ford is a better tractor...

I'd want to know if it was 2WD or 4WD, which transmission it had and whether it has a SuperSteer front axle before responding.

The TN is a continuation of the Fiat 60 series if I remember correctly. It is somewhat updated compared to the Fords. Both are good tractors in that hp range. I'd try them both out,and go with the one your gut tells you to buy. You'll be living with it every day,so be sure you are comfortable with doing everything with it.

There's just way too many variables to guesstimate how long a used tractor will reliably last.

I have a TN 65 that'l be my rake/chore tractor for the summer; has 665 hrs & loaded with features. Hope to sell it in the fall for $11500. Last year ,had a Ford 4100 for that work. Good tractor, but the 4000 series is the most offensively noisy tractor on the planet. This TN 65 seems less noisy & has a near flat deck where you sit up a good bit higher.
