NH256 Operation

True. I've seen the kits elsewhere and am dubious of quality, so my hope was someone may know of a good quality kit. The individual parts would be more expensive...sometimes that's an OK route but I just want to smarten up on options.
Aftermarket stuff is usually from a single source. Everybody that's selling it is selling the exact same stuff, only difference being the name on the package and how much you pay. Sometimes even the OEM parts are from the same aftermarket manufacturer. It's not like the manufacturers keep production lines for every piece of equipment up and running, producing parts for all eternity. If the aftermarket parts have a reputation for poor quality, it won't matter who you buy it from. Not every aftermarket part is of poor quality, though.

The reason it appears to coast is the severe angle of the U-joints... they change velocity every 90 degrees. You can observe this phenomenon if you turn the basket slowly by hand with the box in gear.

At field speed the power delivery is still intermittent according to the position of the U-joints... you just can't see it because the inertia of the basket carries it between the power pulses which are now so close together it doesn't have time to slow down.

Unless it stops while rolling hay, nothing is wrong with it.

My NH 58 did the same thing when it's just free wheeling. Works fine in the hay. One thing you may run into that I did. The input shaft into the gear box was worn at the seal area and a new seal didn't seal it off. Would leak all the oil out over winter. I filled the gear box with grease and haven't had a problem with running that way. Cheap fix if its' not worth spending for a new shaft , if you can even get one.

Follow up to this...does anyone happen to know where to buy a kit to rebuild the gearbox? I'm thinking of taking that on as a project after this hay season.
Try Joe’s Machinery in PA. I don’t have a phone number handy, but they have tons of aftermarket parts for older new Holland equipment.
