I have a NH275 baler and having trouble with the bale length. Most of my bales are coming out around 6-8 flakes and very short. I tried adjusting the arm for size adjustment but that only helps for a short period of time. The first couple come out normal size however the rest start coming out short. ANy ideas ?
Wind rows were full.

There's a friction wheel that the bar that trips the knotter climbs on. We had to change that one time. The old one was worn smooth and didn't have enough friction.

If the link below works, it should take you to a parts diagram. In the illustration, it's part number 7. If the link doesn't work, search for the baler under Online Parts, upper left hand corner of the screen. In the page column on the left, it's number 011 - METERING WHEEL. Says they are still available.

I have a hunch it may be the trip clutch for the knotter. Unless I'm thinking of it wrong, if the trip arm slips in the wheel, it's not going to rise & drop in the notch at the bottom of the rod. So, the bale would keep forming without tying a knot. Creating a really long bale. I almost wonder if something in the trip clutch isn't broken or worn. Might have to take that off to inspect it. Hopefully you have a manual so you can keep the knotter stack in time to the plunger via the roller chain on the side. If that gets out of time, you will have all sorts of issues. May want to get the service manual also. If you need it right away, New Holland has a manuals site. You can purchase & download the manual pdf right away.

One other thing, the trip arm spring may be tired or broke, causing the trip arm not to drop all the way after the knotter cycles. That could lead to short bales.

If the first few bales are normal size after you adjust the trip arm stop....apparently something is changing as you bale. Mark the location of the arm set screw with paint, then see if it changes location as you bale. Is the set screw tight? rr is right, check the friction wheel and arm first because that is the easiest thing to fix. It is not the number of strokes that makes the tie, it is the distance the star wheel turns as the bales comes down the chute. Is the star wheel turning properly as the bale moves down the chute?

Do you have the website where i can view the manuals?
I have seen several manuals but they are for the main gearbox or the knotter system. I have not seen a general service manual.

Thanks

A further update....

It seems DMC Retail is out of commission, has been for the last couple weeks & no indication of when they will be back on line. Looking at Ebay, it seems NH broke down their service manuals into separate books like IH did at one point. Guess you will have to buy them in volumes. So, it looks like this auction (391681135101) & this one (182634849322) should get you started. I'm not affiliated with said auctions. Just pointing out what books you need to look for. You may buy them anywhere you choose. Also, I'm a proponent of buying originals, where applicable. Sometimes you can't always find one & need a reprint though.

Good luck!
Mike

Well I cleaned up the arm and friction wheel and my next bale was 4 ft long. I readjusted the bale length several times and it is now back to a normal size bale. I rebaked some of the small bales and it was working great.
Thank for all those who replied
