Nice Oliver alternator conversion

Now thats a perfect sized alternator, not much bigger than a softball! I could use a dozen of them. From the Oakley Tractor Show. Mitsubishi?

That's a Denso (mini) alternator. Commonly used on race cars, very universal. Probably about 30-35 amps, which is plenty for a tractor. Available from Amazon, or Ebay. I got one that was advertised as a 1-wire alternator, but I had to add and excite wire to make it charge. Wasn't a big deal, just jumped a wire form the plus side of the coil to the alternator, works perfectly.

I just wish they'd paint them the same color as the tractor so they don't stick out like a sore thumb. It's like they're proud that they did something that's not original.

That said, I'm afraid I'll be in the same boat shortly. I just bought an Oliver 600 and it's been converted. If I feel like spending a few more bucks after I buy all the other things it needs, I'll buy a new Lucas generator and regulator for it. I'll have to see what the wiring looks like. If I leave it on there, you can bet your last dollar I'll be painting the tractor with the alternator on it so it's not the first thing that hits you in the face when you look at it.

Lucas is not known as ''The Prince of Darkness'' for nothing. Can't you find some other brand? I have personal experience with Lucas electrics and it wasn't pleasant. And, when Ford purchased Jaguar they immediately replaced the electrics with Ford (Philco) electrics. The British joked that they wouldn't be able to use the Jag as an excuse for being late anymore.

I don't know. I have 2 500s with Lucas generators and they both work. Polarizing them might be the trick. The one on my gasser didn't work until I did that. Works fine now.

I use a Hitachi 14231 alternator 3 wire, available online or any parts store. Had very good luck with them.

Looks good. Definitely smaller than the Delco. Can that be setup as a one wire like the Delco?

I guess I have mixed thoughts on that. I'd be afraid that spraying paint on it would result in a lot of paint getting inside all those openings and maybe doing damage internally. Plus, it's still pretty obvious that it's an alternator, not a generator.

Plus, on one tractor I saw with a painted alternator, the guy also painted over plug wires, hydraulic hoses and everything else. It kind of looked like they just stood back and threw a can of paint at it. I like a little more attention to detail, which would include leaving the alternator its original color.

But that's just me. To each his own.

My 1850 Oliver still has the original alternator and it's painted green from the factory. I bought a new 4040 Deere and that one
was green too.

They could be painted with a sparse paint loaded brush to keep the paint from being sprayed or running into the alternator when painted. With those foam deals for brushes they don't leave much for a mark like some brushes will. Then they can be disassembled to keep the paint out for sure.
