No interest in 871 ??

Guys, I've had my 62 871 for sale for a couple of weeks now. Not
many calls. It is in the adds on this site and on craigs list for
wichita ks. I started out at 3200obo and have dropped to 2900obo.
I don't think I'm to far out of line and am willing to deal. I know I'm
a long way from a lot of the folks on this site being in ks. Reason
for selling is since I got my 66 2110 with p/s, I don't use the 871.
The craigs list add has good pics. I don't know how to post a link.
Just Looking for feedback. Thanks, Lowell

Isn't that the model with the S.O.S. transmission? That is probably scaring off a lot of people. A lot of folks have only heard about the bad ones from the early models.

Hang in there, but you might want to try Fleabay to get a good price on it.
Good luck,

Myron

Lowell,

Hope nobody is unhappy with me posting a link, here it is[/color:9d95a9b2e2]

I'm a novice when it comes to value on these old tractors, but my 971[/color:9d95a9b2e2] is in similar shape to yours. I did replace one front wheel and clean them up with new rubber, but if I went to sell it (after stripping the pie weights off and not including my front weight box), I would start at $2,500 and figure on getting $2,000 if I were patient. She looks like a working girl and most folks looking for a true work tractor end up with something more like you've upgraded to. AND, if they do buy an older rig, most want them cleaned up pretty nice. That said, good luck and I hope you find the right buyer. I enjoy the SOS tractor and mine has treated us well, though I will admit, I've only put a couple hundred hours on it in the last 5 years. It sat for the 7 years prior to that and my dad likely only put 100 hrs of so on it the 15 years before it was parked.

Lowell, I paid 3,200 for my 640 in nice shape and I didn't mind it. But now that Craigslist has changed my life :) I do see 640s for less also in pretty nice shape. I don't regret paying what I did for mine however and to me, your price sounds pretty fair for that machine. Good luck, Doug

Your price isn't bad, but for most people, right now, times are tough!Even a fair deal, like yours, you might have to sit on her a while!
A lot of people like shiney things and you can get more money and a quicker sale if it had a paint job. If you don't paint you must have a buddy that can help you out.Not a lot of Money!
I am doing my second one ever right now.I'm certainly an amatuer but the trick for me is to be patient, take a little time and make sure what isn't supposed to be painted is covered or taped off properly and even I can make one look decent!

that looks like original paint and decals!

If it were me, I wouldn't paint it. It's more virgin the way it sits. It's what I like to call "an honest tractor." Let the new owner paint it if they'd like.

i agree with chris and myron. due to the sos tranny.. you are liekly to be holding on to it till the proce drops to 2ish..

John,
You are right for most people on this forum who know tractors. But we're talking about a man that's trying to sell his tractor and you know how people not really familar with tactors go for the "shiney factor"
I'd bet you $10 to $100, with $150 of paint and $50 worth of decals I could advertise that tractor for $2800 and sell it for $2600 faster than someone could sell it the way it is for $2400,
I hope I'm not coming across as arrogant(I don't like arrogant people)its just that a lot of people(not real tractor people) go for that newer "Shiney" look!
Thanks! GT65

Oh, I agree with you, GT65.

That's the problem, though. Everyone sees it like that, and before you know it, history gets completely wiped out. Original paint on a tractor of that age is becoming so rare that it alone will probably double the value in the not-so-distant future. It has already become fashionable with classic cars and bikes. A classic in unrestored condition(barn find) becomes more desirable than the trailer queen.

I'll have to take some pics of my 1974 Gravely 812 lawn tractor. original paint and tires and the paint is still shiny to the point you can see your reflection. I'll never repaint it, no matter how many battle scars she has.

Wow, Thanks so much for all you insight!! I think I'll wait a little longer and see what happens. I love them in their work clothes. This 871 is ready to be put to work. She will start on the first crank and is ready to go to work. I love the sos and wouldn't be with out it. Thanks again, Lowell

Lowell, we had a 6000 Commander diesel we used as our primary tractor back in the late 60's/early 70's with SOS. We worked her pretty hard and had no problems with it. Wish you lived closer as that's a tractor I'd consider to replace my troubled 8N.
