I just got the 640 tranny back together. the tractor has been down for two years. on the first attempt to start, there is no spark. I've changed nothing but the alternator. can't figure out what may be failing by just sitting there. my next move is to start checking the electical system step by step. anyone seen this b4. thanks, dale in va.

Corrosion sets in when the tractors sit idle for a long time. Do you have power at the coil? If not, check, clean and tighten all connections from the battery to the coil, including the key switch. If still no spark, clean the points, and contacts inside the dist cap, and make sure the points are getting power. The insulator in the side of the distributor could be broken and grounding out the wire to the points. No rocket science. Just follow the voltage and make sure it's getting to where it's supposed to go.

Points man.. check the points... 2ys is a long time to not at least clean them.. and letting them set is almost worse than them running.. they can stick or corode up..

Pull the cap and rotor off, be sure you don't loose the spring clip thats under the rotor, Pull the dust cover and by hand open and close the points with the ignition turned on. You should get a spark at the points. If you don't then you either need new points or you need to clean the ones you have. 2 years is a long time for points to sit and they do corrode just from sitting
