noisy transmission

I have a 1945 Farmall B. The transmission is very noisy. It whines really loudly when in forward gears but not when in reverse. Could the Countershaft and bevel pinion gear be bad? Any other suggestions would be welcome.

The geartrains in these old tractors are noisy to a point. If it's just a whine and not a crunch or creaking noise, you may just want to take the above suggestions and put thicker oil in the rear end, because the cost to tear it down and fix will be a good portion of the monetary value of the tractor, even if you do the work yourself.

You're only guessing at what's wrong until you open it up and check things against specifications with a dial indicator. Though you might be lucky and it will be blatantly obvious what's wrong once you get it opened up.

Pull the cover off the top of transmission and have a look inside. My guess is that it's most likely caused by bearings being worn and/or having corrosion damage.

I bet its the differential causing that whine. common for the crown and pinion to whine once the pattern is changed. when everything is set to spec with new gears there is no whine.

One persons definition of loud isnt always the same as anothers.
My Farmall A was what I would consider loud. I also noticed that when I hit the clutch in it took a while for gears to stop spinning so I could drop it in gear.
After I drained the oil and put in 85W140, it was much much more quiet and I could place it in gear 2 seconds after depressing the clutch.
If you dont know what fluid is in the rear, it could be motor oil which would make the gearing really loud.
