Non-commercial Class A

As discussed in a previous post, I went to the Pa License bureau and got my permit for Non-commercial Class A license recently. I had to wait about fifteen minutes for my number to be called and about five minutes with the clerk. Only thing required was a valid Pa driver's license and six dollars. I did some reading on the drives test, and it is a vastly watered down version of the CDL test. The test includes a vehicle inspection, single back up maneuver and a road driving exam. I will take the test with my truck and trailer, and I will have to have someone with a Pa Class A license accompany me to the test (since I can't legally drive the rig without a Class A licensed driver with me). I plan on taking the test in the next couple of months after the weather clears.

Good Luck!! I got my Pa. Non-Commercial license a few years ago after driving illegal for 20 years. HahaHa. It wasn't too bad. I guess it would depend on who you get to explain the inspection part to. You'll probably have confused people like I did because no one seems to get non commercial licenses. You have the option of getting a new license (that cost money) or get a card to keep with your license with the new information. That is free. Just a heads up make sure you have the correct class stickers on your window and the proper combination registration for your truck and trailer.
I just Grove City for your location. I'm not too far away. Im in Westmorland County near New Stanton

Do you have any experience with the recreational trailer tags? Supposed to not require combination plates.

I do not. Are you referring to a camper? I know a couple guys that pull massive 5th wheel toy haulers and they were the ones hounding me about getting combo plates. I never even heard about combo plates until going to tractor pulls and guys telling me I needed them with my set up. I've never heard of not getting combo plates/recreational plates. Maybe (this is just a guess) if both truck and trailer are registered as RVs than maybe its possible to not need them. I've read and made phone calls until I was blue in the face to try and get myself legal. If the combination of your weight ratings on both truck and trailer are over 26k bounds you need combo plates.

I had a heavy commercial license from 1975 which automatically converted to CDL B. When I needed the A for my 22,400 tandem dual I took the tailer behind my single rear wheel pick-up. Others who were there were in shock that you could get a CDL A with a pick-up truck. After I died and had a pacemaker-defibrillator installed I was DQ'd from commercial driving but I can still drive legally for municipal in state.

Thank you for the information. I got combo plates right before this came into effect then a few years later got my Class A. I just wonder if all trailers can be registered as recreational if they have a high GVW rating? Also I go out of state a lot. Not every state is like this I'm sure. There is always so much confusion. State Police don't know for the most part. If I were you I'd print out that link you sent and keep it with you when driving incase a issue came up.

I have my trailers registered as recreational cargo trailers. You do not need a combination registration for your pickup if you do. I consider my hobby tractors as recreational as someone’s horses or boat.

When calling I would get badge numbers and names. as well as the paper copies of any pertinent information for the road side chats to solve problems before having to deal with tickets and a lot of times if you can tell them this person or that one which just happens to be another officer they will not want to contradict another officer. As for calling as you found out if you ask 10 officers you will get 11or 12 answers to the same question.
