Normal charging voltage

Hi, just a quick question. What is the voltage you should find at the battery with the tractor running if the 6 volt generator is working properly? I've searched here and found different answers from 6.5 to 7.2 to 7.5 volts.
On my 881 I was getting 6.3 volts, then after polarizing, it went up to 6.7 volts.
Thank you.

any thing at 6.5 or higher is charging... However you need a bulk charge to make the battery last longer.... But to see that voltage the engine must be at a higher speed for the generator to put out enough, and if the battery is in bad shape or have a shorted cell, you may not see the correct voltage. If battery is low, running at high speed, you should see the voltage slowly rise as the battery takes on a charge. And if the battery is good, and charging system good, then it will slowly go to 7.1 volts give a take a little bit. Not uncommon to see from 6.9 to 7.5 volts due to regulator calibration and temperature.

A badly sulfated battery will charge up voltage wise but still have no capacity to put out high current. shorted battery will never charge up correctly.

Also confirm the belt is in good condition and tight...

Thanks Hobo and Sotxbill. I had a new battery installed and engine running around 800 rpm when checking the voltage. Belt was fine. Hopefully it is not a voltage regulator problem since access to it is next to impossible with the wagner loader attached!
