My old garden tractor uses a generator, It is not charging the battery but it cranks the engine fine.
What is most likely the problem. Thanks.

YT wouldn't have charged you even a penny more to include more detail, such of the make and model of the little tractor AND the make and model of the engine!

But, no matter, most, if not all such starter-generator units were made by Delco Remy.

IMHO, the most likely reasons it's not charging would be field relay contacts in the voltage regulator dirty and not making contact or a blown fuse or broken wire in the charging circuit.

Also, likely, the voltage regulator is rubber-mounted and there's a little braided copper wire that provides a ground connection from the VR body to the mounting bracket. If this is not intact the generator can't charge.

If none of these suggestions helps and you need to get deeper into the system, here's a link to the official Delco Manual. https://mail.sportsterpedia.com/lib/exe/fetch.php/pdf-bulletin:delco-remy_1mg-150.pdf

Ok, Thank you very much...,The tractor is a 1969 Case 442. IMHO, the generator/starter systems are all alike. You gave good tips. I will check them out.
