Well, I left the ignition switch on. Now my front mount won't start. I cleaned the points and still no spark. What do I check next? Where do you put the multimeter wires to check the
square can coil. It's a 12 volt, negative ground system. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yep. Tip # 38 confirmed.

Look at the coil.

If it's cracked, you do not need to check anything. Just buy a new one.

If it's not cracked, put one lead on the stud and the other on the pigtail. That's the primary circuit. You should see 2.25 to 2.5 ohms.

Then, put one lead on the stud and the other on the tab. That's the secondary circuit. You should see 7-8k ohms.

If the coil is shorted, you will see it on the meter , usually as 1.

But, here is the hard part: even if you do not detect a short, even if it will produce a spark, even if it’s not cracked, that doesn’t mean the coil will work when it’s hot & under a load. So, it’s a process of elimination. If the tractor starts & runs fine for 30 minutes or an hour then cuts off & refuses to re-start, and you checked for spark at the plugs & it had no spark at all, AND you have the correct voltage at the coil that’s a good sign that you have a bad coil. Let it cool off, restart it & if you have a good spark, odds are it’s a bad coil. But, even then, you might end up w/ a spare coil on the shelf!

Bruce,
Not sure what I did, but it's running like a new one now. It only took 5 hrs. to get it running! I'm putting a light on the dash for when the switch is on. Thanks again for all you help. It is well appreciated.
