JS........yep, valves are "weird" on N-Engines. They have NO KEEPERS but are called "tulip-stem" valves and have "split valve guides". The valve, spring, and valve guide are removed as a "unit" by "pulling" a forked keeper at the top of the spring assy with a "hooked" wideblade large screwdriver.

Valve clearance is by "grinding" the end of the stem.

You can search the archives at the top of this page for more info or squander $25 (cheap) for I&T FO-4 manual. It even has pictures for the mechanically challenged.......respectfully, Dell

If its a newer style one piece guide with non mushroom end valve it all comes out the top although sometimes its easier said then done. You stick a big screw driver in the exhaust port and lift up with the tip on the guide and it (guide) goes down far enough to remove the horse shoe clip. then the entire assy comes out the top.

The truth is the exhaust valves are the hardest to remove and sometimes I have to remove the keeper off the stem, force the spring out the bottom, drive the valve out the top and then drive the guide down, remove the clip and then drive it out the top.

If its the old mushroom type there are people more inclined to help you, my experience with those is that they were stuck so bad I had to cut the valve stems off with a torch and took things apart any way they would come out.

Really want to thank every one for there input on this, will give it a try later today, my valves are definately the mushroom style, I tries to pull the valve guides down but to no avail, one other question,is there no way to drive them down from the top.

You cant drive them from the top when the valves are in, thats why I cut the valves off with a torch and drove them out. Not reccomended but I could find no other way
