I spent 3 1/2 hours helping my friend Steve fix this wheel chair yesterday.
He's dating the mother of the guy who owns it.
These things are pretty complex - and cost half as much as a new car.
There is a motor that allows you to tilt it back - like a Lay Z Boy chair. The brackets broke under there and busted the lift mechanism. New lift motor/drive was available so I welded and beefed up the brackets and we installed the new lift.
The pivot on adjustable foot plate was also rusted/frozen up. Required the rosebud torch to free it up again.
The guy who uses this chair won a medal - dunno if gold, silver or bronze - at the Special Olympics years ago for fastest human powered wheelchair racer. There is a video of him at the Minnesota Science Museum in St. Paul. Something like 22 or 23 miles an hour.
He is in the hospital now so it was a good time to get his chair back in shape.
Was told he weighs 202 kg now.
Yes ~ 445 lbs.
Kinda sad but no wonder why the chair was broke down.
There is always something interesting to do around here. Some things really make you count your blessings...

You made my morning hearing about helping someone and the closing line about counting your blessings is spot on.🙌

@Ultradog MN I worked on chairs for about 3 years, they are pretty complex really, very cool of you to fix it for him, when I worked on them we called that stuck stuff Pizz welded, fasteners and pivots would get that, unfortunately that is an issue with a lot of disabled folks is the the lack of control of their urine.
