I have a ridge reamer I picked up at a garage sale so no instruction sheet. The only time I've use it was on an old sleeve just to see if it worked OK after I got it unstuck and cleaned up. I watched some youtubes saw three different procedures to set the cutter and which number setting to use. There's no name on it, web searches showed it could be SnapOn or the one Sears sold. I can't find the instructions anywhere on line. Can anybody help? Second question. When I tried it on the sleeve I ran the cutter all the way out and when the blade pivot passed the end of the bore the blade turned outward and left a bellmouth on the sleeve. Is that correct or should it stop as soon and it finishes the cut?

I have my grandfather's ridge reamer from the 1950's era, with the original receipt. I will llook to see if it had instructions.

Hope the guidance is there, then I can get those to you. Too cold and snowy right now, so it may be a day or so.

Same style as the Blue Point I have, bought it new and never liked it. Try googling the instructions for it.

Looks like the one I bought at NAPA in the early 1970's. Still have it, I don't ever remember using it.

I have one like that. I think the reason you bell-mouthed the cut was that the bore was probably worn where the centering pads were and it was rocking slightly as you backed it out. That may not be a problem because you are wanting to just cutting out the un-worn area above the ring travel in the cylinder and if you re-ring it, the ring doesn't slide up that high when its running. (And a bit of taper helps the rings find their way into the cylinder when you install the piston, too.) If you bore it, you cut that taper away anyway.

You have to stop just before the pivot goes over the edge.

when I used them it was just to cut the ridge to get the piston out, then bore the cylinder

Bingo!! seen lots of engines where the ridge reamer was done incorrectly. especially where the top ring is high in the bore.

Thanks everyone. I have the head off my A and I want to pop the pistons out to check them and the rod bearings while I'm in there. Very little bore wear so I probably will not use it here. Haven't tried it yet but I don't think it will reach the 5 1/2 bore anyway.
