Nuess Engines

Been doing some reading about the 84 series tractors built in England and shipped and sold in the US. The engines used were IH designed, built in a Nuess Germany IH factory?

Question is - what happened to the Nuess engines after the Tenneco/CaseIH take over? Would the 85 series and newer tractors have used a Nuess engine or was there a change - if so to what make engines?

I know the ag line went to Tenneco, but did any engines, like the ones built in Neuss Germany.

Hi Bill, my brother has 4 IH/CaseIH tractors with NEUSS engines, 454, 495 both with D-179 engines, 684 with D-239 and aCaseIh 3230 with a D-206. Great engines all of them. According to web site they were used until 1997 that is the year of my brother's 3230.

My 574 has the D239 engine. Were all D239 engines German?

The 74s, 84s, Case-IH 85s ,95s, the 3xxx and 4xxx all had engines from the IH german plant. The C-xx series had Perkins. I imagine all the IH engine plants went Navistar in 1984.

Hi Bill, the Neuss plant closed in 1997 and was demolished shortly there after. IIRC the Neuss engines no longer met the European Diesel emission standards. If you read the history of the IH Doncaster UK plant, in 1999 when CaseIH and New Holland merged to become CNH, the European Gov't required CNH to sell off the European plants to McCormick. I believe the McCormick tractor started using Perkins Diesel engines that would meet the EU emissions standards. The Perkins engines(now owned by CAT) were build just a couple hours drive by motorway from the Doncaster plant at Peterborough UK. In 2007 the Doncaster plant was closed and production moved to Italy.

Yes, all D-239 engines were build in Neuss Germany. There were 3,4 and 6 cyl models naturally aspirated and turbo models.
They were not only used in European build tractors they were also installed in US built tractors, combines and industrial applications. D-239 was install in US build 544 and D-310 was installed in later 686 and D-358 installed in 786.

It proabley went into Iveco, which is made up of 5 companies to make Iveco Co,I think the Cummings Co, is a major player there for the Iveco European engine market.
