For the last 2 years I have had a crop of nut grass in my garden. Did not know what it was until recently. Does anyone know how to get rid of the agressive grass ? It is taking over my garden and will come through weed guard. It seem to be extremely difficult to deal with.

This was discussed recently on one of these forums. Briefly, nut grass is very difficult to deal with. Old folks said to fence in the grass and put hogs on it which will root up an eat the nuts. Never done it.

Two kind of nut grass, yellow and purple. Basagram is supposed to take care of one of them.
Relative took garden out of production and sprayed with roundup, often, but nut grass not eliminated just thinned. I have a small amount in my present garden and have been keeping it pulled up with the nuts(hopefully) and broken off otherwise in hopes of starving the nuts.

I don't know anything about 'nut grass' but hogs have done a great job for me getting rid of wild read canarygrass.

Its actually a sedge instead of a grass. Hence 2,4-D has some effect on it. Dual/Bicep II does a good job on it in corn but wont help a lot on it in a garden. Can you relocated your garden? It would be a lot easier if you can keep burning it off with Roundup until its gone.

round up will kill it -- sorta-- what the product does is move thru the root-- sometimes killing it before it gets to the nut-- then it comes up again. there are a couple of products on the market used by home gardeners-- that work well-- tho i cannot remember the name off hand. i dont think hogs will work the ground up, deep enough to get the nut-- what we have in missouri is the yellow variety- nutsedge- good luck-- but get after it-- cause it will only get worse.

Just leave the hogs there longer. As long as there is something down there they will keep rooting. The longer they stay the deeper they go.
