O-14 electric start

Working on an O-14 for a customer, rebuilding the engine and getting it running. One thing is, he is an older guy and doesn't really want to hand crank it if he doesn't have to. Does anyone have an idea on what starter we need? I've done some searching, and haven't found anything concrete, and the people haven't been on in years to message them. Also, would like to know where the battery box would have been originally, and how the generator was mounted if anyone knows. Thank you for any help you might be able to give. I should add, it already has the ring gear on the flywheel, so that isn't a problem there.

If it was born with electric start then the engine tub will have a bump out in it for a starter to fit. If it did not come factory with s atsrter then you have to get creative and build your own setup since theres no room to fit one between the engine and the tub

I have never seen one with electric start. That little engine starts so easy if tuned up properly I’m sure a 90 year old gramma could start it. Not sure how you would rig up a starter as even the belt pulley is at the rear of the tractor. The wk 40 can have a starter though. While the WD40 has no electric starter and is about 10 times or more harder to crank crank. I even have starting instructions on u tube.

I converted a hand crank O-12 tractor to electric start, so my wife could drive the tractor in parades, etc. This tractor was at the Spencer Iowa Red Power Roundup last summer, if you happened to have seen it there. I used a small diameter starting motor from a Oliver 66 or maybe a 77, and mounted it between the oil pan and the frame, in the same location an original electric start 12 or 14 series tractor starter would have been. A battery box was mounted on the left side of the tractor, close to the starter. and a 6 volt Optima battery was installed. The thinner battery left room for me to install a starting solenoid and voltage regulator within the battery box. A small generator from an Allis Chalmers G was fitted on the tractor to charge the battery. The conversion turned out really well, I'll attach a few pictures so you can get an idea on what was done. I can always post more pictures or answer any questions. DonO

I like it, I'll have to do some figuring and see what he says. My biggest concern, is getting the hole cut out "pretty"

Having the ring gear on the flywheel solves one of the bigger challenges to this project. I had to do a lot of measuring and searching to find just the right size ring gear. I finally ended up with a ring gear from a AC WD-45. Had to bring the flywheel to a machinist to turn down a step to install the ring gear. Also had to change out the drive on the starter to match the teeth spacing on the ring gear. None of the project was really hard, just very putzy!

So to me it looks like it has the bump out on it. It’s not at my shop, so I had someone take a picture for me. Should only need a starter then… I might see how the Oliver starter will fit there.

I would have thought the out gassing from the battery would corrode everything in the battery box mounted like that unless those batteries don't have an out gassing like a regular battery does. Never was around them so don't know.
