O/T Toyota versus GMC

The last thing I said to my wife before she left "don't run into my pickup when you back out of the garage". Next thing I notice is her standing with her hands on the sides of her face
looking at her Toyota and my GMC.

I forgot to mention, my 2008 GMC had 86 miles on it.

When I told my insurance agent about it he said
"don't feel bad, I have a client that has backed through her garage door 3 times."

They just don't build those GMC's like they used to.

The cost of body work these days is ridiculous. I had an accident in the High School parking lot (otherwise know as the demolition derby) when dropping off my boys.

The car that I colided with was a 1996 Subaru legacy wagon that has been all done-up resently when this girl's family bought it for her. Essentially, she needed a new rear passanger door and rubbing compoud to take the paint off the rear panel.

With her dad, I looked into just paying for the repairs (by the Mass. insurance default criteria, it was judged to be my fault - it wasn't, I should have contested). He had an apraisal done - $1900 for a door on a 10 year old Subaru legacy wagon. Go figure.

A few years ago I watched helplessly as my wife backed out of the garage and into the side of the neighbor's pickup flatbed. The score was - Dodge intrepid $3600 and a 80 something Chevy pickup 0.

The damage on the car body was hardly noticeable and I glued the red taillight lens together to make her legal. Had to fix the car cause it was fairly new. Pickup had a little brown paint rubbed on top of the rust on the flatbed.Jim

i know that feeling when i got my 01 duramax gmc back in 01, i was coming in the lane full speed with the M & loader on it. the roll pin fell outta the behlen power steering & i couldnt turn & not thinking drop the loader to stop faster i ran into the back of my pickup ... needless to say explane that one to ins. guy.... lol had to get a whole new box but atleast they paid it all didnt hurt the loader lol

Body shop rates are getting redicules. A couple weeks ago I hit a pheasant with the wifes 03 Caravan. It was -25 so it cracked the front bumper cover. Asked a body shop how much to fix. About $1000 he said.
I will get back to you on that.
I checked on line. I found a new front bumper cover painted to match and shipped for $250.
I guess I will keep the $800 difference and bolt it on my self.
You know I dont mind paying them to do it. i really dont want to. but for $800 for 15 min work I guess I will keep my money.

Body shop labor rates run about 1/2 of what service rates are, at least in Ohio due to insurance companies price fixing. They dictate what you can charge and your not allowed to discuss increasing rates with other shops. If any other group tried that they would be arrested.

On a similar line, we live in Dallas and mechanical repairs are sky high. We figured out real quick it was far cheaper to have our vehicles repaired in the small town close to our farm in northeast Texas. It"s inconvenient to be without the vehicle for a week, but the cost is about half what we would pay in Dallas. Don"t know about ya"ll, but I"m getting real tired of being gouged all the time.

I do body work, but I don't do Subarus. I did one once that had been in a fender bender, and I couldn't even use standard body tools to straighten the fender. I just worked the metal with my fingers.

I finally put a micrometer on the fender and the sheet metal miked .013, compared to about .032 on a Chevy pickup. The moral is, if you're driving a Subaru and have a confrontation with a Chevy pickup, guess who's going to lose, bigtime.

SOUNDS HIGH- i just had to do a front bumper, headlight, grill and splash on my 06 2500 hd and it was $620.No paint, though.

speaking of these- it's been a great truck so far, but I've put both hub bearings in the front (4wd) in the past year- one at 70k and the other at 92k. almost $600 a whack. I sure thought they'd last longer....

but did u know that the GM metal is stronger than that of the subaru ? even being thinner its stronger. yes american made iron is stronger than that junk outta country. Y do u think china & japan keep buying are steel & not use there own? thats right ours is better quality we can make it thinner & still be stronger than theres

The major differece is that you could load that Toyota in to the bed of the GMC and it would carry it any where in the country.

At least you can put a goose neck hitch in the GMC of yours. My neighbor just bought this 381 horsepower Toyota pickup,after the papers were signed they told him warrenty would be voided if he put one in. Was told the frame or truck wasn't designed for the differance in weight placement. Then he was really upset when I told him about the mileage I'm getting in my 1 ton Dodge diesel. He paid almost 8 thousand more to haul less, carry less, and get less mileage. Not to mention the fact the profets go back to Japan. Oh well, he hung himself.
