I put a gear reduction starter on my "52 8n a couple of years ago. I'm having to dig around with the key, when I start it. Like I have to find the spot it starts. Replaced the switch and I'm having the same issue. Does a gear reduction have a solenoid? Whats going on? I apologize, but I throw parts at something til it starts running. 99% of the time, it's cheaper than labor plus parts.

Rodeo man,You ask,Does a gear reduction have a solenoid?
Yes it does it is built in with the starter. You could check it by hooking a 12 ga wire from the battery positive momentarily touch it to the solenoid terminal on the starter .(BE SURE TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL) When the solenoid post is touch with the wire it should engage the starter every time it is touched .If it wont the solenoid is not making a good connection on the copper disk inside to copper lugs.possibly they are burnt, corroded, or worn.remove the cap and 3 screws and have a look.

The weak link in a Denso starter... Google

replace contacts in a denso starter motor

Other than its a simple repair they are great starters. Sometimes what gets the contacts is folks don't pay attention how well they keep the contacts laid flat when they tighten up the retaining bolts... Clean the plunger well are replace it.
