when draining the transmission fluid on my '49 8n this morning, i found a snap ring in the oil plug under the hydraulic pump. it's id is about 3/8". i change the fluid every year or two as it sits outside, so i know it wasn't there before. there is only one symptom of the hydraulics, it isn't lifting as high as it should, but that usually happens as the fluid gets this milky. please give any thoughts on this snap ring.

thanks. i went through the parts breakdown of the lift cover and the pump, and didn't see any snap ring listed. not to say there isn't one though. does anyone know an online source of an illustrated parts breakdown for the n's? i seem to remember a site but that link was on my old pc.

I have had lift covers and pumps completely apart and back together and don't remember any snap rings -- could it be from the PTO?? Can you post picture.

He said it was 3/8 ID.. that's dern small.. that's why i thought it might be a retainer ring for a shaft / spring up there in the draft mechanism.. etc..
