HELP. I am currently in the process of trying to remove a broken stud. The problem is it has a broken off easy-out, and a broken out drill bit in the middle of the easy-out!!! Will any thing drill through this?? Someone said a carbide tipped drill bit would. Thanks in advance for any information.

I had luck once drilling out a broken ez-out with a carbide bit. The biggest problem was starting it. I had to take a die grinder and grind out a small hole with a carbide burr to keep the drill from skating. Take your time and good luck.

Carbide will most likely do it, but you might break it off in the flutes of the other bit. If you have a steady hand, I would suggest trying to use a torch with a #1 tip and scarf out the stud. You can melt the stud out w/o damaging the cast, by using quick hits on the oxygen. I've done this before, and only had to stick in a Heli-coil to renew the threads
When you drilled for the EZ out, did you drill almost to the threads? A lot of people drill a 1/4" hole in a 1/2" bolt, when you need to go as large of a hole as possible just missing the threads so there is some torque "give " to the drilled shell

here is a link to a site for tips on removing broken studs. there is a special welding rod available to weld a nut over the broken stud to extract it. page 2 has the rod number on it. a truck mechanic buddy of mine uses them a lot, work great on cylinder head exhaust studs.

lil late for my trick now when i have a broken stud or bolt i drill a hole in broken piec stick a bolt in that hole then weld it to broken piece then you can turn it right out

they make a tool to get a broken easy out out just need to know how many flutes it has looks like a socket with tabs stickin out the end the best i can describe

Heat up the sharp edge of the broken easy out or drill bit with the torch red hot then fire a blast of oxygen and blow it right out of the hole.
The base part should be heavy enough to not absorb the heat so it shouldn't burn if you go quickly.

take a pipe and stick wielder wield the inside of pipe to stud relice wilding rod and leave in pipe take vise gripes on pipe worcks good on cumins ntc moters makes $500 - $1000 dolar repare into $20 - $30 daler repair

Thanks guys I think I am going to try the carbide bit first, the problem with welding it is that it is broke off below the top of the hole.

If you are good with a torch you can blast it out by getting it real hot then hit the oxygen quick. Its going to be hard on the tip but this is going to be lots quicker than trying to drill that mess out.If you have a carbide burr for a die grinder that will fit in there you could try that. You could try a punch and a big hammer, and maybe it will break. If the hole goes all the way through, its a lot easier to blast it out with a torch. If its a blind hole the best thing might be to try and weld a nut on it.Even if its below the surface you can build it up with 7018 or Mig and weld a nut on it.As long as you dont have the drill bit stuck in the threads it should come out.

What i ahve done several times is put a light coat of grease around the hole( not on the broken stud), then put a nut about the same size or slightly bigger over the hole, then I weld it as hot as I can get it to the stud. Let it cool a bit and back it out.Sometimes it takes a couple of tries. The grease will keep the weld from sticking where you dont want it to. I use a mig welder, but I have used a stick machine before. The combo of adding heat from welding and welding the nut works really slick..hope this hepls, Jim

with the welding trick and broke below surface try copper pipe fitting or tubing that will fit in hole to protect threads i have had it work
for me. GOOD LUCK btdt

Get a left hand drill bit.. and pray alot...

If you get lucky enoght to get the bit / easy out.. out.. then keep drilling that broke stud thinner and thinner till it is notheing but threads.. then chase them, and jst stay out of the parrent metal..

I believe the tool you are talking about is for removing taps only. I have several and saved a head where someone broke off a Helicoil tap below the surface at the water pump outlet. Came out easily.

The carbide drill bit worked great. I was able to drill right through the broken off easy-out and then drill the broken stud the rest of the way, clean the threads up with a tap, and put the new stud in. Made my day, I mist be lucky. Thanks for all the help.
