Oil Additive

In my opinion, oil additives have their place, but only as a maintenance item - not as a repair item. You might have decent luck soaking your rings in penetrating oil by spraying half a can into each cylinder through the plug hole, letting sit a few days, repeating, letting sit, then firing it up and running hard. Might unstick your rings and burn up some carbon deposits. But oil additives aren't' going to do much on their own to prevent bypassing of rings.

I'm still a fan of additives myself for keeping things from wearing, and I think they do work. I got hooked when I saw a demo at a plowing match from a Lucas rep (I'm sure others have seen the same demo): The rep filled the crankcase of an old cat or Detroit engine with the Lucas additive, ran it for a minute or two. Drained the additive, unbolted the oil pan leaving the bottom end of the engine totally exposed, fired it up, and let it sit there idling for the rest of the day with no oil (or even oil pan) on it. He said the additive provided enough of a coating on the bearing and cylinder surfaces to allow it to run just fine for several hours with no oil. There might have been some trickery involved for all I know, but it sure convinced me. I've been running the Lucas heavy-duty oil stabilizer in all my tractor and truck engines ever since.

this will sound odd but if its sat and the rings are stuck, or sticky, I have had some luck cranking the engine and hit it with ether hard enough to make it rattle, have to be careful not to ether lock or blow a head gasket but the rattle seems to jar the rings loose, be super careful though!

I have an old 2N with bad rings and burns oil. Has anyone used Lucas Oil Stabilizer to help?
If the Lucas (that company makes quality products but I do not know the function of each - but they have a stellar reputation) is the equivalent of the old STP it will be of benefit for sure. Do not listen to the naysayers who advise you to tear an old enginve down and rebuild it simply to resotore a bit of power - that is the true waste of money on an engine with shorter life expectancy anyway.

STP is available at Menards. Forget what I picked up
a pint for last week.
Back in the '60s STP had demonstrations at fairs that
the guy would try to put a .0001 over size shaft in a
hole in a block of steel. Couldn't get it to go. He dipped
the end in STP & pounded the shaft in the hole with his
fist. I never tried doing this.

Back in the 60's Andy Granatelli ran the STP turbine car in the Indy 500 and almost won till the transmission went out as I recall.
