Oil capacity????

Guy's going to be doing a hydraulic/filter oil change on my '75 4500 TLB can someone tell me how much oil i will need??, I'm thinking 15 gallons but not sure if thats just for tractor or the backhoe too. I's not a shared sump with the trans or power steering,as this unit is manual trans and separate PS pump/res. Just hyds.

i need to know so i can go pick the oil up and start this....

Despite being here reading things all weekend, and generally looking for 4500 posts, I didn't see your post until today. Odd. OK, not that odd, you didn't put 4500 in the subject line, so I didn't get around to reading it until today.

A full hydraulic oil change on a 4500 is ~21 gallons IIRC, but I don't know that you'll get everything out. It's about 4-1/2 gallons for the tank in the nose, and about 12 for the subframe, 6 each side, per the manual. The remainder is tied up in the backhoe and loader cylinders, and therefore not likely to be changed, just diluted with clean new stuff. So 16-1/2 gallons per the manual. Change the filter in the nose and clean the outlet screen from the nose tank (on the bottom, while the fluid is drained - undo the four bolts on the outlet fitting and remove the screen) while you are at it. For those that have the power steering that uses package oil (I have one each way - the 1974 PS has it's own reservoir) that also has a screen to be cleaned. After reassembling, pour the new fluid in through the new filter, then run the tractor and cycle everything to get the bubbles out, and recheck the level.

OK, checking the assembly manual I have, system capacity for the backhoes is 6.5, 7.5 and 8.5 gallons for the 750, 753, 755 respectively. But I still say you're not going to get most of that changed directly without a lot of fuss.

Just to add confusion:

The capacities from the 4500 manual (as mentioned above) for just the tractor add up to 16.5 gallons, while the 740 loader manual (remember, the 740 is specific to the 4500) claims the loader capacity is 3.5 gallons and the whole system (without a backhoe) is 14 gallons. Obviously they are not both correct. Perhaps the guy writing the 740 manual left 6 gallons in one side of the subframe? Adds up about right.

So, depending on your backhoe, figure to change 15-20 gallons, (if buyinf in 5 gallon buckets, get 4) and that you'll be managing to change about 2/3 of the fluid. If you unscrew all the hoses to all the cylinders, you might need 5-6 5 gallon buckets and be closer to changing it "all". You'll also have a mess.

any way yea this really helps thank you ecnerwal for your post,i thought about removing lines wile actuating cyl's to get more oil out lota work like you said but i'll try.

i know all about the filter and screen in the nose i plan on dong all that also thanks for that info,im not sure what hoe i have it's one of them,750, 753, 755 could you tell from a pic ecnerwal?

Look on the control tower plate (about where your knees are when operating it) for one of these numbers:

19-388

19-389

19-390

that's 10, 13 and 15 foot hoe (respectively), or 750, 753, and 755 (same thing)

Picture is tiny due to whatever the YTMag photo archive does, but that's a 753 hoe, if it helps any. I've never actually seen the other two sizes.

Hmmm now in confused my plate plate states 19-551,can you tell by the pics??

Parts list says that's a 15 foot, 755. Parts list mentions 19-390 being replaced by 19-551, in fact, so it's a later version 15 foot hoe. "Basic" rather than "auto Dig" (19-552 is a 15 foot auto-dig)

Right no auto dig,so it's a 755 then,cool now i know, i always wondered this of the three what one i had, it's a great hoe i love it works great tons of power no complaints.
