Oil Cooler 165

Need some help with a Massey 165. Continental gas with Multi Power.
Was out plowing (backblading) snow and smelled some trans hydraulic fluid. Got off tractor and there appeared to be hydraulic fluid leaking out of the radiator (?!). Turns out it was the oil cooler in front of the radiator. The oil appears to be dripping out of the seal of the filter housing.

The lines all appear dry, the cooler (mini radiator) also appears dry. Seemed to be leaking pretty good out of where the canister screws into the housing.

Could it be as simple as a failed O-ring on the canister? To my knowledge, the filter has never been changed...could that have gotten so plugged and dirty that it created a high pressure situation? I noticed in the parts diagram that there is a spring and a ball...could that have failed? How will this leakage impact tractor performance if i need to use it between now and when i get parts? I don’t know much about this part of the tractor. What will the part availability be?

Likely the O-ring just failed and a new O-ring and filter may take care of your problem. Its a good starting point, if the filter is full of crap you likely have bigger problems developing.

You shouldn't have to wait more than overnight on the filter and O-ring. Just go to a parts store. The element 191855M4 crosses to a WIX 51720 or NAPA 7120 (sealing O-ring doesn't come with those), and likely many other brands can cross it. The size of the sealing O-ring is right there in the parts book, 2-1/4" ID x 1/8" cross section. If you have a Hydraulic shop near by they should have the O-ring if the parts store doesn't. The hydraulic shop might even have the filter. That may be a Parker housing, WIX info says the filter is used in Parker systems.

Jim, Thank you for the info.
I assume that this filter is prior to the cooler in front of the
radiator? Fluid is pushed through and not suction?

Is this the sole filter for the hydraulic system? Or is this only
for the multi power system? Or none of the above?

Thanks again. I went out just to see if the canister was tightly
screwed, it turned about 300 degrees without much force.

Sounds like you may have found the problem.

I used the info you posted, the on line parts book and some cross references to answer your parts question. I think this is just the multipower filter. I don't have a 165 or a service manual to answer flow directions. You should invest in the correct service manual for your tractor. Hopefully someone will be able to answer your other questions.

I have the service/repair manual downloadedFrom what I can
find this isn’t covered. I have a cheaper, less detailed service
paper repair manual that covers multiple models. I am going
to check that. Hopefully problem will be solved. Hate when
stuff goes awry in the winter.

Actually,
Don’t like it when it happens in summer either.
