Oil drain plug screen

Oil drain plug screen.

I got my 9N in the 1980s. I did oil change as soon as I got it. Bottom of filter canister had 40 years of crud inside and all that got cleaned/washed out. Since then oil gets changed 1-2 times/year, when it starts to look dirty.

The drain plug never had the screen. Didn't know it came with one until I got manuals and saw posts on this site.

Time to change oil again. Should I buy/is it worth it buying a screen? I don't see the screen sold separate from drain plug kit here. Sources? Do they all fit OEM plugs?

Also, what are peoples preferences for oil filters? I've used fram, napa and bosch. Last one I got here, I changed the gasket w/provided one and canister leaked like a sieve. I put old gasket back on.

If you change the filter as often as you change oil, then the brand makes little difference. My personal preference is Wix or NAPA Puralator, Fram being dead last.

My tractor ran for over 20 years without the screen. Tried to put in a drain plug with screen and it would not go in seeing the oil pickup was not properly aligned with the hole,

The build up of sludge could have been due to previous owner using non-detergent oil. If so, this build up is in the bottom of the oil pan too. If you've been using modern detergent motor oil, the sludge will be loosened up over time.

Yes and Yes. I personaly have never seen nor would operate any kind of an oil or hydraulic pump without an inlet screen at minimum.

Screens are part of the plug, not a seperate item

For me, WIX 51010

Can be a little tricky getting the gasket to seal the top of the canister. Wants to come off the top edge sometimes. Check the top cover bolt gasket too. A nylon or fiber washer works good here.

Hmmmm........been going 35 years without the screen with me, and who knows how long before. PITA you need to buy the whole plug to get a screen. Will need to think on that?

When I got the tractor fluids were all dirty and tractor fouled plugs. Tranny/rear had moisture, engine oil dirty, air filter water and crud on bottom.

I warmed it up good , drained tranny/rear, and engine. That's when I found crud in oil filter housing. I don't think there was much in the pan as after that , and later changes detergent oil stays clean a good long time.

The rear I filled with fresh hyd fluid and some kerosene. Ran it around the yard, drained and refilled with universal hyd fluid. Clear ever since.

There was so much crud in the air filter, it raised the oil level to the point of drawing oil into the carb. A clean out and fresh oil there solved the plug fouling problem. Prior owner thought rings were bad. It don't use much oil, by time it's down a quart it's time for an oil change (now)

The oil filter gasket I mentioned was the problem. I've got > 40 oil changes on this tractor and first time problem with a leak there. Damm filters have got pricey! I might try some bosch, a guy has them online 4/$30. I know those are good quality as the same/OEM in some mercedes cars.

Thanks for help and comments all.
