oil filter canister gasket

I changed the oil, and oilfilter, on my 335 today. The filter was the one on it when I bought the tractor, and always leaked some. I found a napa gold 1080 filter in the can, so I went to napa and bought another one. the gasket that came with it, was a flat gasket , about 1/4" wide, and 4" diameter. the gasket looked just like the old one I took off. I cleaned up the surfaces, and used permatex ultra black on the back side of the new gasket, and installed the canister, with new filter. when I fired up the tractor, a lot of my new oil sprayed out of the filter at the gasket. after taking it off again, I noticed a groove on the cast body, that looks like it would take a large O ring. Is this canister supposed to use an O ring, to seal with?

I am not too familiar with the 335, but I looked up on Napa online and it says the 335 uses a Napa 1115 filter. (If you can trust the online catalog).

The gasket pictured for the 1115 looks like the same that my UTU"s use, a thin rubber ring to fit in the groove.
I bet the previous owner was using the wrong filter.

The Napa filter is the wrong part number. If I remember it is a canister filter on a 335. This would take Wix part number 51115. The Napa number would be 1115. There is a difference in the seals that these two filter use.

Thanks a bunch guys!! I think you boys hit the nail on the head! From what I saw today it makes perfect sense! Thanks for the timely advice also. It's too late today to correct it, but tomarrow morning, I have an Idea to work with.

Good luck. Hope the previous filter was still filtering some. If they discontinue the 1115 like they have many other MM filters, you might have to make that other filter work.

I hope you can drain the oil out of the filter well enough and clean up the box to return it to Napa.
