removed exh manifold to repaint and saw oil coming from inside cyl area. engine has 1050 hrs, runs good, starts easy, minimal smoke. only have 3 hrs since oil change so don't know about usage yet. any cause for concern at this point? thx

Could be normal or not. What was the engine like when you saw the oil coming out? Running? Not running but hot? Cold? Can you describe the oil's coming out?

Alan,
I had just shut tractor off, after running for 15 min to check for leaks. had just replaced head gasket, had head cleaned up and valves refaced. head looked good. removed exh mfd to repaint and noticed some oil, not a lot, leaking from port area. i suspect valve seals. How serious is this, if contained to one cylinder? thx so much.

Alan, Yes, set valve clearance at .008. tractor runs real smooth. starts good. minimal smoke. not a lot of oil visible, just enough for me to notice. things like that bug me.

Yes, could be one or more valve stem seals, but since the oil pressure stays up a bit after shutdown I'd just use it, keeping track of oil consumption, and not worry if you don't need to add any between the 100-hr changes. (If you were thinking of installing an oil gauge, it's theoretically possible the pressure is set too high, though I've not seen that.)

If it makes you feel better toward the engine (if not toward the person you bought it from), it would have been impossible for you to have verified the hours showing when you bought it, and the rebuilding you put into it is more expected after 5000 hrs.

alan, oil pressure, per gauge, is 50-60 cold, 40 hot. don't think that is problem. will monitor oil usage. thx so much for input.

Right -- the pressure's perfect.

Even if you have to add a little oil because one of the wear caps is a bit worn or pitted (or if the spring tilt or compression are off specifications), it won't hurt the engine to run it, the way a leaking HG would.

Speaking of which, you might want to re-torque the head bolts after 50-100 hrs. It would take you ten minutes, and it's good insurance.
