Oil in Coolant

Have a 966 that's getting oil in the coolant. Bought a new oil cooler and installed it. Ran the tractor to flush the cooling system for a half hour. Didn't clear up at all. Checked the oil level and I lost at least 3 quarts of oil. Any idea where the oil could be leaking into the coolant?

My guess would be a head gasket failure or a cracked head. The pressure created in the cylinders is greater than the pressure in the coolant system. But are you getting three more quarts in the coolant?

You need to check your old oil cooler it may not have been bad. You will need to heat it as you pressurize it. Put a plate over the oil holes then in a tub of water heat the water with a torch or fire then add air pressure to the oil cooler your leak should show up. can check your new one the same way. I would suspect the new one is bad.

At least 3 quarts within 30 minutes of run time. This tractor has sat for over 5 years without running. Got it from the widow (she's 98) of the original owner. That tractor was bought at the local dealership and spent it's entire time 6 miles away (3862 hours). I'm thinking the same, a head gasket, but it starts and runs great with no smoke.

I had a tractor with the same symptoms. I put a dt414 from a 915 combine in it. Made a better tractor. You can buy combine engines a lot cheaper than repairing your old one. I now have a 986 with a bad engine and a junk 1440 combine with a good engine. I?m going to put that together this winter.
