oil john deere m

Hey farmer john,
Depends a lot on what type of weather your operating in, but a good all around oil is 10-30, or 10-40 non diesel oil. Will work in almost any place or weather conditions.

I use the straight 10 weight or 20 weight depending on the season that the manual calls for. TSC carries it in jugs. I know everyone else says go with the new stuff but it has kept that engine going 60+ years, no reason it won't for another 60. Plus if you get the straight weight that is also supposed to be in your touch-o-matic as well. If the oil seal goes in your touch-o-matic pump and oil leaks back in to your engine, like mine did, you may feel a bit more piece of mind. I know I had to start up my tractor and move it into the shop once I figured out I had oil going into the engine from the TOM and I personally do not like to mix grades of oil no matter how short a period of time. Just my 2 cents.

The best is just a matter of opinion. I still use plain old 30wt non detergent in mine. It's worked well for 62 years & there's no point in changing now.

If you want to go with a modern oil you can't beat Shell Rotella 15-40. Works fine in gas or diesels and is priced reasonable. Do plan on changing oil more frequently for a while if you go with a high detergent oil in an old engine. It will wash the old junk out and leave in the oil pan.

You can use any oil designed for a diesel in a gas engine, but not the other way around. Any quality oil, Deere, Delo, Shell will be fine. Either 30wt or 15-40.
