631 oil leak on rear axle assembly used jb weld on it last fall held for awhile now leaking again
leaking from the trumpet on out. could this be welded? If could find one in a salvage yard.

so.. the underside of the axle trumpet is cracked?

are you sure that is not a casting mark, and the leaky oil is not running from somewhere else and settling there?

post a pic

thanks.. that will make it a whole lot easier to diagnose.

don't think I have seen an axle trumpet crack in that area. if I dd.. I think I'd replace the trumpet...

Hope this helps

The crack is so small can't see it when I patched it as you can see the patch it didn't leak for awhile. It is not overfull and no oil around the seal

i'm not sure what the point was showing a picture if the crack is not evident??

was that thin fimy stuff some sort of clear epoxy?

if there is a structural crack in the casting.. replace it.

if there is a porosity or void or other weep leak.. I'd break it all down.. maybee strip the paint and clean it and then solder up.. etc..

Wanted to wait till the weather warms up here a little and maybe no more snow. that funny looking stuff is epoxy that i put on last year and it did work for awhile and didn't leak. It just kinda seeps oil in fact couldn't see the crack till i used a black light. Will clean it up good and try to solder. If that doesn't work may have to replace if can find a replacement.
thanks you for your help

i doubt you will have a problem finding a axle trumpet, if it turns out to be a structoral crack.

if a simple weep or porous cast.. id strip the paint and boil off real good.. use a soap degreaser and chemical cleaner inside and out and inspect with strong light.

various ways to seal the casting.

if a visible crack, v groove a boit and braze or silver solder up.

Larham, Don't be hoping that you can fix it on the tractor. As SouNdguy has said you have to clean it first. That means inside and out. You will need to grind down in a little in order for solder or brass or whatever to have clean material to adhere to. You will need to use a solvent such as acetone applied to the ground out groove in a manner that it will flush oil down and away from the surface where the crack is. I would not go through all that myself for no guarantee of success. Because many old tractors get scrapped, but almost never break or crack a trumpet, you will not have to pay much for a replacement.
