esva 8N

1948 front mount 8N. Started it up for the first time in a few weeks and the pressure gauge pinned at 60 and I started getting a very significant leak of oil coming out the top of the oil filter. Fair amount of smoke out the exhaust as well. My first thought is that there is a blockage someplace but maybe it's the oil pump? Any suggestions for how best to start trying to diagnose the problem would be greatly appreciated as I'm much better at driving them than fixing them. :)

In the front of the engine above the water pump is a fairly large nut, probably 11/16. Behind that nut is the oil pressure relief spring and valve. It may be stuck closed. You could remove the nut and try pulling the assembly out and free it up. If it won't come out, try spraying something in there, WD40, carburetor cleaner etc.

There is a gasket that goes under the oil filter cover bolt. I have tried many home made gaskets over the years and sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Get the proper gasket and it works. You still might have an oil pressure issue.

Thank you very much for the ideas. I will work on them first thing in the morning and let you know how it goes.

you're welcome, jim - can't blame u. cold, wet, and miserable here today too. i happened to remember because just before i rebuilt my engine, i had to replace my 15/16" socket, and that was the first thing i used the new one on.

Checked out the oil relief valve and everything looked good with no blockage. Put everything back together and the same problem exists. Oil was really pouring out of the filter and I think way too much for it to just be a bad gasket. Also, when I opened up the filter it was filled with oil all the way to the top so maybe there is a blockage there? Any other ideas?
