A friend of mine has a F 40 and installed new Autolite 3116 spark plugs in it. Today under medium working conditions it started leaking oil from the spark plugs. The small seals or gaskets are on the plugs. What would cause that, any suggestions. I know I"m confused.

First clean the area good and make sure the oil isn't coming from above.
Make sure plugs were not over tightened and the seals were crushed.
Do a compression check, may be time for new piston rings.

The reason I'm concerned is he bought the tractor from me, I didn't have this problem. Hopefuly the picture show up of the F 40 I did.
It's not coming from the valve cover, it's clean. The rings seats on the plugs are ok from what I can tell. I'll have to check the compression, but I haven't noticed it blowing any heavy blue smoke from the exhaust to indicate rings. ( Sometimes a light amount when first started )

Setting that aside, (future ring job) Why is oil showing up around the plugs ? High compression wouldn"t do that, so how can low compression cause it ? Correct me if I"m wrong, but in my opinion bad rings would be blowing smoke out of the exhaust, not pushing it out from the spark plugs. Is it because I can"t see the forest because the tree"s are in the way ? Like I said, I"m confused and need advise, I haven"t had this happen before.

As long as there is compression in the cylinder and oil is present from worn out rings and or worn out valve guides the compression will let the oil creep up and out the spark plug threads.

If the oil leak has only started since you fitted the new plugs I would take a good look at the plugs and the seat that sits on the Head next to the sealing washer. I wouldn't think that all four could be faulty but something is wrong, take a good look at the plugs and compare them with the old ones.Did you tighten them to the correct torque with a proper wrench..John
