Oil Pan Repair

I have a leaking oil pan on a 10-20 McCormick. I was told to coat the inside with fibreglass resign. Will this work? any other ideas?

pin holes? brazing them up would be better i would think.

A lot depends on what type of problem you have . Vibration from the engine can crack fiber glass in a application like that and then you have other major problems. I would probably not try the fiber glass my self but would weld or braze etc it

over time the oil will loosen the resin from the metal. if they are pin holes, you can use a gas tank liner like red-coat. soldering or brazing if you have enough metal there. otherwise you will need to cut the rusted area out and weld in new metal.

I used silver solder to seal a pin hole in an oil pan. It never leaked after the fix. Hal

Fiberglass won't last long on an oil pan. Neither will JB Weld or PC-7 Epoxy. It would be best to braze it. If that isn"t possible you can clean the inside real good and coat with Red-Kote fuel tank liner unless it has a large hole.

Thanks Guys.
I was afraid of brazing because I didn"t know the thickness of the metal. Thought if something else worked I"d try it.
Brazing it worked fine, turned out there was lots of metal and not much paint.

You didn't braze it IN PLACE with oil and gasoline vapors trapped inside it and the crankcase, did you?

Ha Ha, no.

When they blow, the pan gets mushroomed out, hiding the oil pan bolts. Makes removal REAL difficult/hammer needed!
