Oil pressure bypass valve

Was reading a thread about 861 oil pressure this am and thought about this: I have a 4 cyl 2000D and have had it for 10 or so years. I run 15w-40 C rated oil in it and have since I got it. I change the oil when it starts getting dirty which is about once per year with filter. Uses no oil to speak of, original, 3500 hours and proofmeter works.

Question is: my oil pressure runs over 50# cold and has since I got it and only after the tractor has been worked real good does it come down to around 50.

Have heard that on gas engines, which turn the oil pump shaft with the distributor, high oil pressure puts undue stress on this shaft.

Other thing I have heard, and I have 3 or 4 Ford manuals including the entire shop manual series for the hundred series tractors, that Ford, like JD (4020 6 cylinder for one) has an oil pressure regulator valve set at 30#.

Initially I thought that if it had one it might be dirty and maybe twas because of using non det. oil when new (PO), or just it's age (1963 model). I figured that if that were the case, over time my HD oil would wash out the crud and it would start functioning.

Well nothing has changed over the years.

it's my understanding that the N OPR valve is set around 45psi full open, and the 00+ is 55psi full open.

I must have a dozen red tigers at my house.

it's COMMON to see 55-60 cold psi at startup especially if you give it some throttle.

when at idle and warm.. many of mine are still 40-45. I have a few rattly beaters that will drop to 25-35 hot idle, depending...

How do you tell when your diesel engine"s oil is dirty? I change the oil in my 641D a couple of times a year, and after a couple of minutes of run time with the new oil, that oil is very black again.

I have had the tractor a long time and the oil situation has always been that way. I would admit that my tractor has a whole lot of hours on it and there is a bunch of blow-by.

If your diesel doesn"t make the oil black real fast, it is probably in pretty good shape. I sure wish I had those kind of oil pressure readings! If it was mine, I would leave it alone.

Interesting pressures. My 861 currently has straight 30W in it and at start up it runs about 40 psi at 900 rpms. After warm up, and at idle, it's about 25-30 psi. Having an issue with some pressure fluctuations so I'm draining and dropping the pan this weekend to see if I have any oil pump problems I need to correct. The tractor will be used in N. Il. this winter for snow plowing so it's going to be refilled with 15W-40. I'll let you know if my pressures increase switching from straight 30W to 15W-40 if I can't find anything else wrong. What does the "C" rated indicate? Commercial? I bought Shell Rotella HD 15W-40 T. I believe the T is just their marketing ploy for Triple Protection of some kind or did I buy the wrong rated oil?

C stood for compression = diesel

Dropping warm oil pressure has meant worn bearings since Ive been working on engines.Also learned that a worn oil pump may have trouble picking up 15/40 oil in cold weather on startup.
