Oil Pressure

Just a lil survey question. What are your oil pressures running at idle on a warm engine? Cold my runs around 35PSI. Drops to
around 15-20 when hot. This is on a fresh oil change 30w with one can of STP added

my numbers are very similar. 1947 2N, got new sleeves, pistons, rings and rod bearings last winter. did not do the mains.

it runs @ 38 cold and 20 hot.

bruce: i also run straight 30W, no STP. should i not be running straight 30 in it?

One of the reasons Multi-vis oil was invented was to reduce engine wear on cold start up. It's a greater problem in cold weather. I guess if you live in south FL, TX or CA, straight weight oil is ok. Anywhere else, I'd use multi-vis. Where are you?

"meatchicken" is an homage to the late bob ufer. he did the play by play for the university of michigan's football team, but he pronounced michigan... oddly :) i'm about even with royse, but on the other side of the state.

my N is a dedicated lawn mower. it takes winters off.

ah, love that edit button.

i forgot to ask - at what temp and below would u consider it a cold starting situation?

Rather than guess, I tried to find TOH's viscosity chart & couldn't. Hopefully he will be around soon & help us out.

Cold for mono-grade engine oil generally starts at 32F. Ford's 1950 recommendations for mono-grade oils is as good as any. From the 1950 8N Owners Manual:

SAE 30 at temperatures above 90F
SAE 20 from 32F to 90F
SAE 20W from 10F to 32F
SAE 10W from -10F to 10F

Below -10 you are SOL and most likely before that....

You got real good oil pressure. Oil brands are a personal choice. Basically oil is oil you can buy the wal mart house blend cheapest oil or the Royal Purple and in 10 years of running you wont see any difference. I buy Mag oil at ACE less then $3 a qt, ebay had 5 qt containers Valvoline $!4 free shipping I bought all they had. Bought a case of Trop/Artic less then $3 a qt at walmart.Checker has a $6.25 price on a qt. of Valvoline but thats because they are losing parts sales to the online buyers and they are trying to make it up on a draw item ---wont work.. It all came out of the same hole in the ground it all feels looks and taste the same and dose the same. I have a 70 yr old 2N I owned it for 40 yrs tilled 100s of garden spots, has no issues or oil related problems no leaks drips and never had a wrench on it except a water pump. Never anything used but 30w Non_detergent,yep Non detergent, I have yet to see in any manual the says use detergent oil in a 9 or 2N.You do know oil is a gimmick and the----Advertised 3000 mi oil change on your car is proof.I go 7500 on my vehicles. ? Why did you put STP in you know it is just gear oil and makes cold starts harder it really serves no purpose ---a pint of MMO would be a better choice but thats me I just love that stuff in gas and oil. Anyway its your tractor do what ya like and welcome to the FORUM home of the 4 horsemen.LOL

(quoted from post at 05:03:47 02/16/17) around 45-50 degrees

So, your lowest cold start-up temp is 45*? Because you're in western NC, that means you only operate the tractor between June & Sept? :) I spent many a cold night in Pisgah National Forest in October!

Yep Bruce we live in Hickory NC west of Charlotte. Your dead on on the months we use the tractor other than dressing up the dirt
road once in a while. A few months back they had big fires in the mountains and got so smoked here (about 2 hours) east of the
Pisgah our inside smoke alarms would go off if ya opened the door. It eventually rained and put itself out. Beautiful country for
sure.

I was a Special Forces radio operator; back in the day (1969) we spent 2 weeks in the Linville Gorge on our final FTX. Send & receive four messages a day for 2 weeks or flunk out & get sent to the 82nd ABN! . Went back a couple of times as a civilian. Beautiful place.

Warm oil pressure? My 2N is at zero when warm. It's been demoted to parts tractor until I find time to investigate further. I'm thinking bearings, but who knows until you get into it.

Yea Jim I'm sure mine will come on down this summer when it's 90deg. Just found out my uncle acquired the tractor from a man who
owed him money for a brick laying job and my uncle took the tractor as partial payment. Don't know much history on the tractor but
it appears all the used 8N's don't run a great deal of PSI oil pressure
