Oil pressure

Hey,

I recently bought a 1949 Ford 8n front mount distributor. Can anyone tell me what the oil pressure is supposed to be?? I was reading 30 to 40 lbs before I changed the oil, now it reads around 50lbs when first started up and goes down to 4o lbs at 1/2, 3/4 throttle.

Useing shell 15w40 oil. Thanks BP

sounds like yer braggin...

oil relief likely happens at 45-48 psi.. yer gauge could be 0-4 psi off if old.

engine sounds real tight.. probably had 30w or 10w30 oil in it before.. or it was slightly fuel thinned..

sounds good.

BP.......would it surprize you to learn that is "normal"??? Cold oil generates more oil pressure than hot oil; its the LAW, Visicosity Law. Also the faster the oilpump pumps oil, the higher the oil pressure. Dang generation raized on "idiot lites". Pay attention in school science class, eh? .......respectfully, Dell

dell-are you trying to be a smart pass? he asked the question because he didnt know...i think that is what this forum is for...no need to talk like that to him...

I have a 1949 8n I rebuilt two years ago. It has less then 100 hours on the rebuild. In addition to new rings, bearings, etc. I also rebuilt the oil pump. With mine, using 20w40 oil, it starts out cold reading 50+ lbs and drops down to 30 when hot in summer after cutting grass for an hour or so in 90 degree weather. From your oil pressure it sounds like the bearings and oil pump gears are in great shape.

Mike,

IF n ya read this forum a lot, you will see that Dell is always the info giver, sometimes with a laugh sometimes with a twist. Smart pass - no - just straight from the hip. From J85 the one who can laugh at Dell and LAUGH with him!

I use 15w40 and have similar pressures on an old 9n that runs great. And yes I'm bragging,HaHa!!!!!---lha
