Oil pump shaft

I have just completed a rebuild of my tractor eng. (172 gas) in the process I replaced the oil pump shaft that was severely worn with a piece of a 1/4 " hex wrench cut to length. Is there a way to keep it from sliding out of the worn end of the distributor shaft? I peened it and shimmed it but I don't have full confidence in my fix. Any other ways of doing it short of a new distributor shaft?

The new rebuild is not worth the cost of a distributor shaft?
Because that rebuild + will be the cost when it fails.

Yes I agree - it's not the cost so much as availability. I have only found complete distributors so far. What is in a new distributor that keeps the hex shaft in place? I am hopeful that someone else might have come across the same problem and come up with an answer I haven't thought of.
