Oil Question

During the summer, I use 10W-40 oil in my NAA.

The most readily available 10w40 oil is marketed as "heavy duty oil for diesel engines."

Is diesel motor oil acceptable for use in my gasoline powered NAA?

Thanks for the help.

When they made the motor they had specifications the oil had to meet to be used in it,and over the years they added more stuff to the specifications.Diesel motors get lots of soot in the oil so they raised the specifications for Diesel oil, plus diesels like to work hard and a little hot and that meant they had to have oil that kind of sticks to the surface better when you shut it off for a diesel.Since diesel oil has more detergent for the soot, special additives to stick better to hot metal, and multigrade so it works all year in all temperatures, and 40 weight instead of 30 weight when its hot,it works good in a gas motor. Not that there is anything wrong with oil made for gas motors, but diesel oil is good oil for a hard working motor. Now if you had a hot rod motor you might want it a little thinner to run back in the pan quicker or to wind up faster, something like that.I could be wrong, just my opinion.

In your tractor, it probably makes no difference.
The big reason that most in the US usually don't use a diesel oil in a gasoline engine is catalytic converter poisoning from any oil consumption issues. ZDDP, which is usually in high levels in a diesel rated oil, can build up in a cat, and cause premature failure of the part.

Here is another thing that might help. Unfortunately, it doesn't list the levels of additives, but can at least give you the break down of the API Service category classifications. Both SM and CJ-4 oils have significantly lower levels of ZDDP, as per our new emission parts longevity concerns.
