Oil shortage

I bring my own oil and filter to a chain store to get my oil changed. I use Rotella T6 in my 6.7 power stroke. I went to the usual store to get oil and they had none. I went to 10-12 stores in 4 cities before I found some. I almost fainted when I got the bill. Anyone else having trouble finding oil?

This is going to be a very interesting year for farming.

We have used up the inventory of parts and stuff the past 2 years.

Manufaturing hasnt been making stuff as fast as we are using it. So the inventory is gone, and the transportation delivery system isnt up to speed either.

Going to be a lot of shortages of stuff we really need and are used to just getting off the shelf.

We coasted through last year, it was showing up at harvest hard to get parts.

This year will be some kind of exciting.

Most stores around here 15W-40 is very hard to find in any brand. Except for my local FS, they have several pallets of it in quarts, jugs or 55 gal drums. I picked up a few cases of jugs today

Tell us more about bringing your own oil and filter into an oil change store. It sounds a bit like bringing your own food into a restaurant. Do they discount the price or simply charge you the same as if you had used their oil and filter?

You got me worried, we use 0-20 Mobil 1 in our Subaru, so I checked the local WM, they seem to have plenty, $27.47 for 5 quart jug, I don't think it's gone up any.

(quoted from post at 05:13:45 02/18/22) I wish people would quit calling everything "shortage."

It's NOT a shortage. There is plenty of everything. It just isn't where it needs to be.

I'm going to go to Vietnam and dig up some rare earth and bring it to the manufacturer in CA that can't get it for their production.

Menards has been the only place I have consistently seen Rotella recently. I stocked up for the year a couple months ago when I found it.

T4 in the old stuff, T6 in the new stuff..,

I posted about this a couple of weeks ago. Seems to be mostly 15w-40 in my area. If you showed up with your own oil and filter and asked for an oil change at any garage in my area you would probably be told to hit the road. There is no money to be made doing oil changes. Even the jiffy lubes are suffering in my area.

I've been checking the shelves at Wally World every time I'm there, even though I've got a month or two before I need to change the oil in my Duramax. I usually run 5W-40 full synthetic in the winter and 15W-40 semi-syn in the summer. Lately the only thing on the shelf seems to be Rotella T4 (which I never use), but last week I found some 15W-40 T6 and grabbed it. I think it was $57 for a 2.5 gallon jug; a bit high but not exorbitant.

What about other grades? I only use plain old oil in 10-40 grade in my old vehicals. one is a 03 Dakota with 301,000 mile. 4.7 engine.

Y son and I get 15-40 in the bulk. A few months ago our supplier told us the shortage was close to reality so we filled up our tanks. Now the supplier is empty. I hope our supply holds out until it becomes available again.

We have a 2014 Subaru my wife bought used, it has 90k miles on it now. Unfortunately it is one that uses oil. I had been adding O'Reilly's 0-20 synthetic in it. It used a qt in 800 miles. When I changed it I thought I would treat it to Mobile 1, consumption went to 300 mi/ qt. Went back to oreily's and consumption is improving.

I'm with DH on this one Barney. There's lots of money on the planet, I just don't have as much as I would like. I'd say that's a shortage in my little world.

Barnyard: I remember World War II. (The Big One). There was plenty of oil and gasoline during The Big One. There weren't enough
railroad cars to carry it everywhere so the military got the priority. That created a 'shortage' for us. There was plenty of rubber
in the world but the Japanese had it. That created a 'shortage' for us. Semantics.

I wish I could afford to buy oil in those little cute jugs would save draining /pumping it out of the barrel. Just so much cheaper for the volume I use to go the barrel route. I do that for all of it. Oil antifreeze and fuel in tanks. Don't buy oil or fuel in cans. Have not had a problem with getting oil here. I don't buy synthetic though.

Tsc has been out of rotella and Valvoline 15w40 for a month now. I got to go the rural king next 3 towns over and there getting short now.

The Subaru we're driving now is an 18, it uses maybe a quart in 2000 miles. The previous Subaru was a 15, it maybe used a quart in 5000. We drive about 6000 between changes, almost all highway miles.

I only use motorcraft filters so I bring my own. I go to the havoline oil change store. They charge 33.00 but they check everything, even air in the tires. I could do it myself, but have trouble getting under a vehicle. Plus they dispose of the old oil.

I buy Rotella in drums from Sams Club..Since 1997 I have been writing the cost and year I got it on the wall behind the drums.Rotella, hydraulic oil,and antifreeze in a row.In 14 a drum of Rotella was $400.In 17 it jumped to $680.Last week it was $724.I called to check on availability, the woman told me it comes and goes. They'll have plenty, the next day, none. She told me to call every day, sooner or later I would hit the jackpot. She gave me an SKU number, and said to call and just ask for that.I hit paydirt on the third day I called. They wouldn't 'save'me one, unless it was prepaid.I gave her a card number and an hour later it was in my truck.

I have worked for a New car dealer for 48 years in parts management, lived through UAW Strikes, trucker strikes it has never been
this this since WWII. It doesn't matter what year the part is for, or what model things are Short since nnalert. Part of the reason
is if a person thinks like a computor it is more understandable. When you shut down 3/4 of the nation demand slowed. Electronic resupply
is geared in daily demand. Past history of sales turned upside down thus restock didn't happen till way too late. Plus many didn't return to
work. & like a big snowball it got much bigger as it went down hill. As for my store I could see things were not getting any better only worse. I drove close to 400 miles to buy 10w30 & 13w50 motorcraft diesel oil & had to buy in 55 gallon barrels But I had some to sell I didn't buy it all but bought more than I normally did picking up a extra drum of each. To my suprise We returned to that same warehouse & picked up 3 more barrels of each. I run a smaller Ford Store & we build a new building during nnalert. The building still isn't done but we moved in in October of 21. Befor the moved I looked at my backorders & added them up to near 71K at dealer cost. I cancelled many of those parts because I didn't want to move them along with the rest of Inventory. Parts ordered for customers I kept on the list & shortened the list to 48 different parts. To this day 3 of those parts still haven't came, 2 were ordered May of 20. First part of January I couldn't take it anymore, told my owner I was retireing, a tad early , but tired of being held responceable for something that is out of control with no end in sight. Tired of being yelled at by customers, mechanics & owners, tired of trying to locate a part at another dealer only to find out they wouldn't sell it to me, because they too knew replacement part was impossible to find. Ford has parts with a monthly demand of 3000 & there are over 40K backordered. So ask yourself or do the math & figure out how many months manufacturing is they behind? My neiboring GM & Mopar store's are in the same boat, all of us have had to use Aftermarket parts to have parts to sell.. Now I sleep better, but I don't think the winter is a good time to retire? LOL

Tractor Supply opened a new store in our town 18 Dec last year. They had 5 gallons of Rotela $10 off for opening week end. I got a rain check for 5 of the 5 gallon buckets (all they would let me have) To date I still do not have the oil but when I call they say the rain check is good. Our regular supplier has kept us in oil but sometimes do not get all we order.

I bring my own oil and filter to a chain store to get my oil changed.

Wow. I don't think I have the stones to carry my own oil and filter into a shop to get the oil changed. If I am going to purchase an oil change I will purchase the supplies from the shop as well so that they also can make some money. I guess variety is the spice of life but sometimes you just gotta shake you head.

I'm with your 48C, I'm shaking my head too. I think taking your own O&F into a shop for an oil change is super super el-cheapo, to the point of being ridiculous and embarrassing. If I were a shop owner I'd tell the guy to leave and go somewhere else. You're right, them making a few dollars on the O&F is part of the deal as far as I am concerned. We finally agree on something .... LOL !!!

When I worked for a service station during and right after high school,I remember the owner tossing people out that wanted to bring in their own oil and filters. After I paid attention a little bit,I realized he was tossing out the people that wanted to bring in their dime store oil and filters. We did have quite a few customers that used only certain oils and filters. If we carried it they would have been buying it from us.Some Mercedes owners only used what we didn't carry, but they were willing to pay. Also,at that time people were going crazy over Pennzoil, with Z-7.I don't know what it really was,but the believers acted like they had found the holy grail. Also willing to pay.We handled Rotella, and Delo 400,so we had a lot of customers just because of that.

> Last time I changed my tractor's oil, T6 was full synthetic 5w-40!

T6 is (usually) available in both 5W-40 and 15W-40. Supposedly it also comes in 0W-40, but I've never seen that on the shelves. I use T6 5W-40 in the winter; GM keeps issuing recalls on my Duramax's block heater, so I use the thinner synthetic oil in the winter so I don't risk burning up my truck with a suspect block heater. I usually switch to a cheaper semi-synthetic 15W-40 like Rotella T5 in summer to save a few bucks, but Wally World didn't have any semi-syn. And they only had T6 in 15W-40.

I'll bet you didn't know you can run T6 in your crotch rocket. It's JASO MA rated for motorcycles with wet clutches.

In today's modern times it is more and more common to schedule appointments for auto service online. That gives the oil change store time to get non-stocked filters delivered in time for the appointment.
