Seems like I can't keep one for very long. I remember when I was a kid, Dad had one of those old big floor model things down cellar. You had to take the battery down there to it, sit it on there and hook it up. I remember there being a big dial on it to set the rate of charge. You'd click that until the gauge went in to the green. I was in awe when I saw the first portable charger that you could hook up without taking the battery out of the vehicle.

Here is one of mine. Have had it for many years and it still works great. It was made by Acme Electric. I live about 20 miles from where it was built in Cuba, NY

I let the smoke out of this charger. Only thing that was good was the transformer.
I replaced everything. Installed a switch on the left to use one or both diodes. Added a dimmer switch to turn it into a trickle charger. And used a 20 amp fuse instead of the circuit breaker. I use a timer so I don't overcharge a battery.
I use this to wake up a dead battery to use a smart charger.
Some dead batteries can't be raised from the dead, but if they can this guy can do it.
I bought this charger when I was in HS. I'll soon be 76. The charger is a 12a charger.
