Old Briggs and Straton engine model ?

I've found that somebody on here always knows everything about some items, so here goes.

Have a B & S five horse engine. Believe it was on a go-cart. Probably from around the early 70's. The serial number is D412072. For the model number, it says "look on the instruction book". Well, that is long gone of course.

So as a long shot, do you guys know what the model number might be? I need to order the armature that sits above the fly wheel.

This might be like asking " I have an old tractor, what model is it?" Sure would appreciate any help!!

Check the sheet metal cowl that covers the flywheel for a series of numbers and letters. You might have to lightly sand the area to see the numbers stamped into the metal. The information that you are looking for is probably coded within this ID.

Yes you will need all of the # from the starer housing or a really old time parts guy.

Are you SURE the model # isn't stamped on the flywheel shroud?

Seems STRANGE it would refer you to the book!

I'm GUESSING it's a 13XXXX series, and a Briggs coil part # 397358 SHOULD fit and convert it to magnetron ignition.

There's an aftermarket part, 31-7288, that will likely cost you about half what a genuine Briggs coil will. GOOGLE the #'s and see if it looks correct.

You sure as to what you need?? Armature would be for a alternator but as Bob has pictured that is a mag and that is something toldlly different.. But then I would almost bet I have a mag laying around here some place since I do have way way to much junk around. I remember putting a 5HP B/S in a golf cart years ago and it is out back some place and still did run back who knows how long ago. Oh by the way them things had points under the flywheel and that could be your problem

Old, Briggs calls the magneto igntion coils as shown in the photo ARMATURES.

WHY, I don't know!

Guess I need to look at a few of my old manuals to see what they say. Funny how names change to protect the names LOL or is that to protect the back pocket of the company that sells the parts

Hello Gordy from Iowa
Here is some info hope it helps.

B&S web site had the ID info that Guido posted and more and believe it or not they do now have some parts list online for some models even older than yours. Even new coil assemblies are still called armatures by B&S. Numbers should be on a tag or stamped on the air shroud as said also. Can even buy and price parts at B&S online or go to a local dealer.

Well guys, I guess it is polite to tell the out come of my question. I never did find the model number and finding out I'd need at least 70 or $80 in parts, I drained the oil and gas and put the whole engine in the pile for the junk yard.

Hated to do that, but it just wasn't worth fixing in my opinion. Thanks guys!!
