Old Case Backhoe

Hi! I have a 1959 Case 420B. It runs ok but the Case-O-Matic drive is slipping badly and frankly, I don't really understand how they work. Someone relatively close to me is selling a 1963 W3 (530) with a blown enginge for $800. My question is will the 420B engine bolt up to the 530?

a W-3 will have a three bolt starter and a 159 engine (longer than the 148 in the 420) so its not just a bolt in and all fits swap,, it can be done but you have to know what all you need to change, a 420B has a torque convertor (like the automatic trans in your car/truck) so it is supposed to "slip" like they do,, it has a lever on the RH side of the steering wheel that once you are moving you can pull down and it will lock the convertor out aka it acts like a standard transmission then,, the W-3 can ave the same transmission as the 420B does depending on how it was ordered in new,, go to your local CASE CE dealer and order a operators manual for the 420B it will tell you what you are asking and a whole lot more info you will need

Thanks for the reply! Sounds like more work than I want to get into. The W3 does not have Case-O-Matic (I asked) and my 420 slips even when it's locked. On the slightest incline it will just stop moving. I might buy the W3 anyway and fix the engine. seems like a good deal.

Do some investigating as to how much a rebuild kit for a 159 costs before you buy.

Ok but those are TOUGH units so all it may be is a sticking relief or flow control spool causing it to not pull like it should what kind of PSI is the pressure gauge reading with pedal out and in COM and then Direct or lock up mode, do thing with shuttle and trans shifter in "N" at idle and wide open, I own a 420B the COM drive is light years better than a dry clutch model for loader work

I'll check it this weekend. I live about 30 miles away from my farm. I think it was in spec the last time I checked it over the summer.
