Old drop spreaders

Can the old drop spreaders be used for lime? We are picking up some small hay fields like 5 acre fields. We are having trouble getting them lined really only one place around that does AG lime and he is over booked and is doing all the big crop fields. I was wondering if we could use an old drop spreader which can be found around fairly cheap to put the lime down ourselves? Pelletized lime is so expensive. Also what else can the spreaders be used for?

I think thats one of the things they were made for is spreading lime they will also put down grass seed or wheat or oats seed or dry fertilizer

The one I have really only does lime well, I ve used it for fertilizer but its tough to set just right. But I agree, I think lime is what they were primarily for. If the lime is damp, and it always is, it will bridge in the hopper after a little while. My answer was to drive like crazy, the more it bounced around the better the lime fell through. Spread about 20 tons one spring. Certainly not the fastest way, but it worked.
