Old Steering Wheel finish

On my old Case and Cub tractors the steering wheels have lost their shine and black rubs off on my hands when I drive them. This doesn't bother me much but is there any product or method to refurbish the old plastic?

You know, i've tried a lot of things over the years, I'm recommending that you replace the steering wheel if you have excessive cracks.

I have tried sanding it with 600 grit paper then buffing to a shine with a buffer wheel and a little bit of armor-all rubber protector/shine, (works sort of well)

I have also tried to buff it out and just put linseed oil on it or laquer. It works for a while, but chips.

I honestly don't know of a real "fix"

try filling cracks w/ 2 part epoxy sanding smooth and paint. Or just fill w/ epoxy, sand and install old style steering wheel cover its a good look and easier on hands while operating the tractor. They have replacement S.W.on this site. I may be strange but I like to keep my tractor as origional as possible. I put the cover on our TO-20 its real comfortable and doesnot allow transfer of heat or cold also minumises slippage while sterring. Regards John

I have had very good results using the paint they sell for plastic patio furniture, Xylon or something like that, just sand and spray.

Sanded mine and painted with gloss Krylon black 4 years ago. Its just starting to wear a bit in a few spots. Another sanding and coat of paint and will last another 4 years. You can also have them refurbished by Minn-Kota if they're really cracked. www.minnkotarepair.com They will strip and redo the whole wheel for around $70.

Our Farmall B did that when I first got it running again after sitting. After 2-3 handwashings it just stopped. It was only oxidation and just needed to wear off. A little buffing might help along with weather protection (if that is an issue).

I'll have to agree with the spray paint solution. I had the black hands syndrome about 5 years ago. A few coats of black spray paint have been working fine ever since. Looks a lot better, too.
