Older tractor and "V" rake

I have a 12 wheel "V" rake and I'm wanting to pull it with an older tractor, I'm thinking something in the Farmall M class?

Do you think an M would pull it ok? Would the hydraulics be enough to lift the wings?

What other tractors might you suggest?

Well, if you are from my area, you will need at least 300 hp to pull it because the neighbor only has 290 hp.

An M should work just fine. Only problem is that the belly pump reservoir holds only 6 quarts of hydraulic fluid. If the cylinders on the V rake are already full, it will work. If the cylinders are NOT full, just add hydraulic fluid to the system until everything works, and then you're good to go.

I think a M Farmall will hardly know the rake is behind it.

We tried to pull a V rake behind my 350 - ran out of hydraulic fluid.

pull a 12 wheel with a 77 oliver had to rig a 2 way valve but it works call if you need help link_disallowed days

The others have a good point, my H is converted to live hydraulic with a 6 gallon tank.

Will the M be fast enough? I pull one with an Oliver 1550. I run fifth gear about 3/4 throttle to make a nice fluffy windrow. An M isn't near that fast in 4th.

really you dont need a tractor that costs 40k and up to pull a hay rake.

I had a IH M , and you couldn't pay me enough money to spend a day on it raking hay.There are many good
1960's tractors Olivers ,AC Case JD and IH that would be much ,much more comfortable to ride, and do a good
job , without breaking the bank , Save the M for a parade.

you didnt mention if it is level or flatland. It does make a difference. I personally prefer my Oliver 1955. (I prefer the 1955 on any job) Looks like overkill on the
flat fields but in the steep hills I have had that thing throw coal smoke all the way to the top. Really glad that I have 3 speeds to shift back. We will start our
hay season with the 1955 0n the Haybine and 4010 on the Hi cap rake with whatever is available for the tedder. But as we move to the hills, Oliver goes to the rake and
4450 mfd on to the haybine. Often need the mfd to make the hills or to hold the sidehills if that clay is at all wet.

i pull a 12 wheel vrake most of the time with oliver 88 gas or diesel. doesnt work at all

And if young Bubba is going to drive it then you will need to add 2 x flashing beacons, whippy aerial, CB and he will have his cell jammed between his shoulder & ear :roll:

Our hay fields are fairly flat, for southwest Missouri

But really, no steep hills at all, just what I consider gentle slopes.

I'm probably not doing it right, but I've never made a race out of doing my hay, so speed is not a big concern for me.

Right now I'm using a 2440 JD for a rake tractor. I guess I'm looking for an excuse to buy an old row crop. We had an H when I was a kid, really like those old tractors.
