Oliver 1850 Rearend

I just bought a 1850 gas and the guy I bought it from was driving it down the road and heard a noise and slowed it down and the rearend locked up in it. He took the shifter cover off and looked at the tranny and said that everything looked good inside of it and the cover is still off. The tractor rolls ok but when you put it in gear and let the clutch out it starts to kill the engine. I am not sure what this could be? If it was a pinion bearing I would thing that it wouldnt roll at all? Would I be able to see anything if I took the pto housing off and looked inside of there do you think?

I agree with Chuck on the input shaft. I was into one that the pieces took some teeth off the the pinion.

Does it matter what gear you put it in? More than likely a gear welded itself to a shaft.
