Oliver 1950

I recently purchased a 1950 oliver in need of repair. Was told buy the seller it stopped just going down the road. Killed the engine. Like it got caught in 2 gears. I had the top cover off of the transmission yesterday morning. That doesn?t seem to be the issue. No broken forks. Shiftrails line up. I can get it to go into the gears on the right hand side, R1, R2 & 4, 6. Not the others tho. Acts like it want to go forward. I think some if not most of the hydraulic oil drained into the rearend. Going to put some more in this afternoon. I hope solves my lack of powersteering problems. Waiting on a service, operator & parts manual, right now. Not to familiar with the large frame Olivers. Big IHs? are more my forte? Was, what I think too good of a deal to pass up. (Maybe not)

Well, I?m stuck up against a pit, bunker right now with the wheels cranked the wrong way & no steering. Hopefully I can fill the reservoir up long enough to get steering back temporarily. Seems like it wants to lurch forward when I let out the clutch, with it not in a gear. I tried to put it in reverse and Slowly let the clutch pedal up. Acted like it was in 2 gears & was going to kill the engine. I can ?catch? a neutral between the 2 ranges & let the clutch out. Obviously it ok then.

I'm thinking seized tranny shaft like Arnie said, but with that said,I broke a shift rail rod in my 1550 a few years back. I took the shift out and popped it in to neutral, but then when I shifted to reverse again it moved the fork and wouldn't pull it back again.

Well that?s too bad to hear. I should have done some more investigating beforehand. Another Oliver going to get parted out. Life lesson learned.

Exactly what happened to mine, Randy. Once I got it out I saw it was already welded once and broke again and looked like cold rolled steel. I was getting ready to make one till I took the other one out and saw the part number stamped in and where the notches were heat treated. Smitty fixed me right up.

If you repair this tractor be certain that the lube pump is working. Just because the chain is in place and the pump is turning doesn't mean it is working. The guy up the road from me modified a lube pump filter that allowed him to read pump pressure while running. Just for test purposes. Was removed and ordinary filter was installed before tractor left shop.

Are you really going to part this tractor out? I'd be interested in the tractor or parts if that's the case. Feel free to email me or give me a text/call on my cell. 5026559367
