I finally got my oliver 421 sickle mower running. my question is the hydraulics suppose to lift the bar all the way. mine just raises it about 3 feet

When you say all the way up, do you mean straight up, 90 degrees to the ground? The 3' of lift you have is about right for most. Standing the cutter bar up is a hands on task on most, then a rod with a nut is used to hold the cutter bar in that position. Keep hands and fingers away from the knife and guards when tipping the cutter bar up.

Yes you learn real fast to keep your finger out of th guard an section and if your lucky when you learn you only get a small cut but most learn when there finger is laying on the ground and there bleeding

If your mowers sickle bar is driven by a pitman stick instead of a belt, and you raise it too high it most likely will break your pitman stick, while running your sickle bar.

it is mechanically driven. one thing I like about it. really is build pretty good. mows great.

Is that at the outer end of cutter bar when just raising with the lift, that is about right for that with inner end being 12-15' high and with the bar raised that is same 12-15" high. I started mowing over 60 years ago and never saw one that the inner end of bar would raise to a 3' height.

My no.8 John Deere lifts about 2 1/2 feet high which is perfect so you can keep it ruining with the bar up sometimes when I turn and hit a big bump the bar will jump up and make the pitman chatter

You must have a different model Deere NO. 8 mower than I had, would only lift the inner end about that foot, Now the only mowers to lift the bar level were the old horse drawn McCormick models so the end of bar that would be about correct But I thought he was talking about the inner end. And that is what I was refering to not the outer end.

Leroy, U must have had a different Mc C more than Ive got. My #9 will raise the bar a foot or so at the outer end by pulling on the lever. It does NOT raise it ALL the way up. Thats always been by hand.
