I have a question about my wife’s Oliver 500 diesel. The serial number of this tractor is 100232 D the specification number is VAD/2/0A We need some engine parts and it seems like every place I look, wants to know what engine it has in it. How do I find out which engine this tractor has? Is there a number tag on the engine some place? Or was there only one engine that was ever used in that tractor? If so what is the model of that engine? Thank you for any information.

The tractor is a David Brown 850, imported for Oliver. Should be the 2.5L diesel. The 500 guys will probably be along tomorrow to answer more questions. I think you may be able to get some parts through a Case/IH dealer. What kind of engine parts do you need?

I'm with scooter. As far as I know, all the diesel engines are the same. They put a DB Crop Master gas engine in some of the early ones. I have one of those, and a diesel. They did make some changes to the tractor itself at serial number 101500 or so, but I didn't know they changed the engine. I guess you could mention that if somebody asks what engine you have, just tell them it's the early one. As scooter says, CaseIH has some parts for those. I needed a fuel pump for my diesel and the dealer had one right on the shelf. Just tell them it's a DB 850.

We bought this tractor knowing that it was not running I'm pretty sure that it had been barn stored for most of its life but for the last few years if its life i think has been out side without a cap on the exaust. I'm thinking that it got water in some of the cylinders and got some rust going. I haven't pulled the head yet but I am thinking I will have to get an inframe rebuild kit. If anyone has any other ideas I'm open for any other thoughts. I did get a hold of a Case dealer and they asked what engine it had. I did say that it was the same as the David Brown 850.

It is stuck we have put it in a high gear and rocked it pretty hard with no movement of the engine. I'm afaid to try pulling it with another tractor in gear because I don't want to bend a rod.

I just went to Agcopartsbooks and David Brown Parts Ltd. There's no serial number split on those engines for any parts what so ever. They must have been the same all the way through. Tell whoever you're talking to that the only difference is gas or diesel. Nelson LaCount was the real go to guy on these, but he died recently, so it's down to a few of us others who are next in line. I have two 500s and a 600, but I'm not an expert on them. Here's the link to the parts books. You can check yourself.

Well, if you pull the head and find it needs a lot of work, I might consider a different tractor. They're a bit oddball and parts/time(labor) probably wouldn't be worth it. If you like Olivers and need a good similar size tractor, a 550 is hard to beat.

Maybe try emailing importtractorparts in Canada and see if he can give you some direction as well. I don't know if he has 850 parts.

I learned long ago when talking to Case/IH parts guys to not mention Oliver 500. I tell them I'm looking for David Brown 850 Implematic LiveDrive parts. Have not needed much in the near 35 years I have owned it. Fuel lift pump and a water pump were the ones that stand out along with some seals and gaskets.
